Accounting is the operating system of the economy. It establishes trust, informs major financial decisions, and underpins long-term growth for businesses and individuals alike. Yet despite its importance, much of the profession remains constrained by manual coordination and repetitive work that limit scale, drain talent, and pull accountants away from the strategic judgment their clients depend on. The result is a system where exceptional accounting remains scarce, shaped more by capacity limits than by client need.
After a decade building financial infrastructure at Stripe and Brex that moved trillions of dollars, we were drawn to what a similar shift could unlock for accounting.
Over the past year, working closely with firms like H&R Block, Armanino, Creative Planning, and several other Top 100 accounting firms, we saw a clear inflection point. As workflows have grown more complex, advances in AI now make it possible to simplify long-standing processes without compromising transparency, auditability, or trust. Fragmented systems define accounting today; AI-native systems define the next era.
Accrual is built for that shift. Our mission is to accelerate economic growth through intelligent accounting by giving accountants the infrastructure they deserve, amplifying their judgment and enabling elite financial sophistication to be delivered consistently across every client they serve.
To accelerate this goal, we’ve raised $75 million led by General Catalyst, with participation from Pruven Capital, Edward Jones Ventures, and a group of fellow founders, industry executives, and angel investors. We’re also grateful for the guidance of leaders from KPMG, Deloitte, and other top firms, whose perspective continues to shape how we build.

At the core of Accrual are AI agents designed to function as a tireless preparer. They read every document, identify missing information, generate targeted follow-ups, produce draft returns, and apply corrections on command. The purpose is not to replace professional judgment, but to amplify it by removing the mechanical work that prevents accountants from fully exercising it.
We are applying this agentic platform first to individual returns. Documents, organizers, preparer notes, and returns flow through a single workspace, with data structured the moment it enters the system. Each stage reinforces the next: extraction improves preparation; preparation improves review; review improves client guidance. The workflow compounds rather than fractures, allowing firms to do far more with their existing teams while raising quality over time.
Accrual is built for the reality of accounting inputs, from complex K-1s and 1099s to spreadsheets, emails, photos, and multi-hundred-page statements. Each input is automatically classified, organized, and linked. Deep integrations with existing tax engines enable seamless imports of prior-year returns and carryforwards, as well as clean exports, so firms can continue working within the systems they already trust. As data moves through Accrual, the platform builds a coherent understanding of each client’s financial footprint: what each document represents, what has changed year over year, and where anomalies emerge.
The result is more time for analysis, clearer reviews, and more proactive client conversations.
“Returns coming out of Accrual are already at manager-review quality. What used to take hours of staff preparation now processes in minutes. Just as important, Accrual is catching issues that could have led to amended returns and handling documents our existing tools can’t. That shift frees our teams to focus more on higher-value planning and advisory work.”
John KarlsNational Tax Practice Leader, Private Client Advisors, Armanino
"Accrual has transformed our return workflow by eliminating the need for admins to organize client information – everything flows directly to our staff. Not only are we able to prepare returns faster, but Accrual helps surface critical issues and actionable notes upfront, rather than waiting for reviewer feedback."
Ben HakePartner & Director of Tax Services, Creative Planning
“Beyond efficiency, Accrual has become a strategic advantage for us. It’s central to how we position ourselves with acquisition targets and partners as a technology-forward firm, and in an industry with a real technology gap, it’s helping us build a durable competitive moat.”
Jay BrooksPartner, Stephano Slack
Accrual is core infrastructure for modern accounting firms. It unites fragmented workflows into a single intelligent system that scales CPA expertise, expands team capacity, and supports consistent, high-quality work at scale.
Firms that adopt this model will not just keep up with rising expectations. They will deliver cleaner work, deeper insight, and a client experience built on confidence and trust. This is what the next generation of accounting firms looks like.
